Our Trip to the Science Fair

Class 3 attended the BAYS Fun Science sessions held in Ulverston on 17th & 18th March 2004. This article was written by Samantha Baines of LAMPS Year 6.

On Wednesday 17th March, half of Class Three embarked on a trip to the science fair in the Drill Hall, Ulverston. Once inside we were met by a gentleman and he showed us where to put our coats. When we went into the actual science fair there were several interactive activities which we took part in.

Our first activity was the planetarium where there were lots of constellations of stars which include the Plough, Big Bear, Little Bear and a lot, lot more.

The second activity was to see the amount of pounds a paper bridge would hold. The equipment we could use was rolled paper and nuts and bolts. We made a bridge and it held 12 pounds before it collapsed. Another group in our school got the record of 22 pounds (they had run out of weights before they could finish!).

The third activity was to see how a plant breathed. At first we didn’t expect to see much but I was proved wrong, we saw exactly how the plant breathes, and how it stops water from being absorbed into its leaves. We were also able to see how the plant lets sunlight into its leaves by little things which looked like little lips in a circle, these are called stomata. There was also a plant which protected itself. When anybody touched the leaves it shrivelled up because it thought it was under attack by a predator and that was called a mimosa and some people took them home.

Our fourth activity was to sit on a seat which spun around, with weights in your hands. The man running this activity pushed the chair around and if you put your arms out you slowed down, but if you pulled them in you went even faster. It is all to do with the centre of gravity.

Finally the fifth activity was my favourite because we had to touch a static electricity ball and all your hair stood on end and everybody kept touching me and giving me and themselves an electric shock!

I asked a few people what they thought about the trip this is what they said:

‘It was very, very good!’ remarked Andrew Young.

‘It was fun and at the same time educational’ said Liam Covey.

Sophie Ridyard said ‘It was good because you were having fun and learning at the same time.’

Erin Tubman said ‘It was good’.

‘It was really good but I wish there was more time’. Said Thomas Bentley.

Hannah Bradley remarked that ‘It was good’.

Aaron Wilde thought it was ‘Fairly good’.

But I really thought it was brilliant and I would love to go again!
